My first Parker, 2005 Fly Mojo

Post by Deft Tungsman »

A week ago Monday, I left home on a four-day business trip for a client of long standing in the Netherlands. I always bring an acoustic guitar along to keep me happy during the evenings after work, and this time was no exception. Getting a new guitar, especially a new electric guitar, was the farthest thing from my mind.

Instead of playing my old Martin, however, I surfed guitar porn on the internet. Somewhere along the way, I saw something about the Parker Fly, and for the umpteenth time I recalled the one and only time I'd actually played one. It was 25 years ago, and I've never forgotten the experience.

Long story short, my timing was pretty good because this gorgeous Fly Mojo had recently been put up for sale on the other side of town. I pounced immediately, and took advantage of the next three days before picking it up to find this place and discover just how much I didn't know about these amazing instruments. Folks, I am beyond stoked !!

Thanks, folks, for the warm welcome and the words of appreciation !

Over the past five days I have played the guitar for hours on end. I went out and bought a stereo cable to split the piezo and magnetic signals. I've plugged it into my various amps and devices. And I have spent practically just as much time playing the darn thing unplugged.

The Seymour Duncans? My ears are very happy with what I'm hearing. The coil split works very well, but I also really enjoy the clarity of the pickups in full humbucker mode. The guitar doesn't feel or sound sterile or clinical at all. It sounds and feels like a very responsive wooden guitar.

The piezo system? No complaints either. In fact, I'm much happier with the way it sounds and performs that I ever was with the piezo-equipped PRS Hollowbody II I had for fifteen years. I've always suspected that a PRS HB Spruce would be a better instrument, but they are exceedlingly rare and priced accordingly.

Now that I have the Fly, even if I found a PRS Spruce that wasn't out of my price range, I'd probably pass. Especially because I already know that I don't like the Archtop pickups that PRS puts in their Hollowbody modes. And although the Hollowbody is light, it's far less comfortable to me than PRS's thinner albeit heavier solid body models.

I started playing guitar at 16. I still have my first guitar, a 1979 Gibson The Paul I bought brand new. Since then, I've bought and sold my fair share of instruments and have wound up with a nice little collection of fine noise makers. There are two James Trussart guitars, a custom Strat I've had for over 30 years now, and a Steelcaster I got for my 60th birthday. There are two PRS Customs, an '88 and an '89. There's a Patrick Eggle Berlin I recently acquired after many years of waiting for the right one to turn up in my neck of the woods. And, of course, the Teuffel Birdfish I bought 25 years ago.

The Fly is an incredible addition and truly stands in a league of her own.

Speaking of which, she's calling out to me now...
