Re: Strings - I tried NYXL and was disappointed

Disclaimer: I am not one of those with legendary corrosive and abundant sweat that eats through strings. I took the plunge on the NYXL (for my Fly Classic). The break in period was minutes and the tuning stability (even with heavy use of the trem) has been an improvement so far (i.e. roughly 3...

LED Re-soldering

The LED on my pre-refined Fly unsoldered over time. In fact, I never have seen it work (hence my questions). However, It does not look like it has broken off and may be re-usable. My questions are: - Can it be soldered back on without taking out the PCB? (I don’t solder, a tech would do it - I need ...

Re: Notes for general guitar technician/shop

After I throughly explain and provide documentation, I never fail to ask for a quote before commencing the work. I do so as we know that a responsible tech will spend quite a lot of time looking into this. Otherwise, some pseudo Parker tech can start charging by the hour…and the amount in the end ca...

Oy!
Behold the power of greed.

I wonder how much I could get for a photograph of a spring in mint condition.

Re: Springs

I am sorry, but some of the changes introduced were NOT for the better (switches anyone?). So I would have to have the info in this video confirmed by Wilmington people before I put all my faith into it. Absolutely. There were plenty of questionable cost-cutting measures that certainly did not help...

Re: Springs

Sounds like the challenge is for real. Yes, there are also some societal challenges working against us as well, but things are still moving forward. I understand the demand (amongst Fly owners) to be very high. I am unsure how feasible it would be to meet the demand once the springs are ready (at l...

Not an update per se, but here’s more as to why spring development is no easy feat. It was quite an eye opener.

@mmmguitar So, what you're saying is that I may have questioned the knowledge of Steve Blucher himself? Oh, GREAT! Smooth move on my part  ... You would imagine there's more than one tech at DiMarzio in the loop about the Fly...(Blucher should have left schematics and info around, no?). My u...

Re: diagnosing bridge pickup of '97 Fly Deluxe

I concur…the bridge pickup is not weak at all.

If it is an output issue, adjusting the pickups’ height can help balancing things out. Perhaps only the bridge pickup has been set too low?

Anyhow, reposting this as a guide (source: VJ):

Re: Stuff I found on Craigslist

I’ve been wondering if screwing a strap pin directly into the neck joint is really as cringey as I think it is. Intuitively, it seems like that’s a mistake, but I don’t really know for sure if it would make a difference. I also don’t know if the Fly would balance better for that point… Exactly.Ther...

Re: Play in trem arm bushing

Upon closer inspection, the spring had shifted a bit (towards the bass side) in the assembly, so I did centre it back. Not sure if/how much it contributed to the issue. Otherwise, the arm bushing has some visible gunk in the back. Perhaps that could explains my issues with the arm not being able to ...

Thanks for the input.

I’ve been playing a bit with it and all seems back to how it was (knock on wood).

Both bridge bushings seem fine, but maybe you can spot something I cannot:

Re: Play in trem arm bushing

Hmmmm—hard to know what that could have been, but if I had to guess I’d say that it was related to the bridge arm or the bridge arm bushing moving ever so slightly. Maybe the thread in the bridge arm was slightly off and it corrected itself?! 🤔 It’s just weird that this happened on one side only (e...

Re: Play in trem arm bushing

Hey Popeye— Once the arm is in the arm bushing, you just bend it forward without letting bridge bend forward—you don't need much: it's just to angle the arm a bit so it doesn't slip right out of the bushing. Make sense? Ahoy! Success with the bar. Thanks VJ. Popeye is helluva strong. He held his br...

Re: Play in trem arm bushing

…the bar can be bent a little once it’s in the bushing; that should hold it in place a bit better. Would anyone care to elaborate about how to do this (and/or kindly share a picture of a bent (hex) arm for me to compare)? I attempted this on my own, but figured out it wasn’t going to be that easy. ...

Canadian members, feel free to add to this thread. Some issues can be worked on by several techs if you provide adequate info. However, I cannot recommend serious Fly work* to be handled by a local tech. * Serious work: working with the PCB, restoration, trem work, most mods (unless using PTP wirin...

I do not believe that the manual has the relief specified. However, @vjmanzo got it directly from @Ken Parker that they would measure .007” at the 5th fret with 1st & 12th depressed: https://flyclone.com/viewtopic.php?p=4567&hilit=.007%E2%80%9D#top That is what I was referring to. My memory...
