Re: Vibrato amplitude

I can barely pull down 3 semitones (with effort). It sounds like your spring is way too tight. 😬 Is the spring angled on the upper of the three ridges inside the cavity? It could be that too. Thanks for the response. The spring does not seem angled (I opened the cavity; further I had it put on the ...

Re: Vibrato amplitude

I was wondering about this…but mainly the pull down range.

I’m asking since I have an 11 spring with a 10-52 set (usually in Eb).

I can barely pull down 3 semitones (with effort).

I’m wondering what is considered more normal pull down range with lighter springs and strings.

Thanks.

Fly: Fact or Fiction?

Greetings, I remember in the old forums that some members mentioned that Ken Parker (supposedly) stood on the neck of a Parker Fly (as it was resting between two chairs). However, I have not seen any evidence of this. I thought some people might have confused him with Ned Steinberger who actually di...

Re: Balanced String Set/Bridge Issues

Thank you again, sir.

Anyone with 52s here? What is your string action set to on the bass side?

I.e. All my issues are on the lower strings (mainly the Ab one as I’m tuning half a step down). My Fly is in the shop for what seems to be a full fret dress.

Re: Balanced String Set/Bridge Issues

Is it even possible to raise the saddles individually on a pre-refined Fly?

Otherwise, the radius would be set at 14” at the bridge (on a pre-refined Fly) and non-adjustable, correct?

Thanks to all. You are invaluable to other Fly owners (like me). 8-)

Re: Balanced String Set/Bridge Issues

Having to keep the action high enough and still having some fret buzz got on my nerves. Hence, the Fly is back in the shop. My techs (and I had) tried all we can we the truss rod and action, etc. to little avail. My question: Their concern with going forward with a more thorough fret dress (if it co...

Re: Springs

I must say this is very tempting. The price is still very expensive, especially when converting to CAN dollar.

@vjmanzo : did you have a rough price you’d think you’ll sell springs once ready?

Re: Using different string gauge than tremolo spring

The short answer is that they don’t. But it can be done. Circa 2011-14, I recall a number of guys ordering 7 string MaxxFlys for the sake of making NGD posts instead of music (which is how you know someone considers themselves as djent guitarist 8-) ), then promptly reselling them once they found t...

Re: Using different string gauge than tremolo spring

Sorry for bumping after the fact. I’d like to still use the trem (I only have an 11 spring). Lately, I’ve been tuning down to D standard (while dreaming of a 10 spring - I.e. I had been in Eb before). My questions are: - Is this still ok to do so with this spring (11) and gauge (10-52)? - I see peop...

Re: High fret

Here are some pictures of frets - fretboard edge is looking pretty rough… Let me know if there is a better angle to take pictures at. Were the fretboard edges like this when you bought the guitar? A higher-res picture (if you can) may help diagnose the issues. I’d take pictures again (both sides), ...

Re: High fret

I have been tweaking my guitar action for the last week or so. Last night, I set the relief to be quite flat (less than .006 at 12th with 1st and 24th fretted). Was very surprised that there is little to no buzz anywhere, save for a sitar (basically dead) at the 3rd fret on the high E. I took a cre...

Re: Springs

Let’s hope so. But the example Gibson’s been setting with sitting on the TransTrem since the 90s is a bit discouraging. Could you imagine a Fly with a Transtrem (the original one)? Now that would be far-fetched…but interesting for sure (would most likely need to be a Nitefly). Heard the original Tr...

Re: Springs

+1 to those ZPS and Zero Resistance trem thoughts, as well. If only those had been sold separately (in an “aftermarket hardware” capacity, anyway), modern players would think twice about hardened steel knife edges. I’m still bummed about Strandberg switching their trems from bearings to knife edges...

Re: Springs

Having had licensed and an original Floyd, I have to say the (Ibanez) ZR is my favourite. Easy to set up, smooth and reliable. The ZPS makes it much faster to change things on the fly as well. I can go nuts on it and it stays in tune (perhaps not Vai nuts though). Now, I don’t know someone crazy eno...

Re: A summary of the Fly changes/issues through the years, and a brief history of Parker Guitars

How different does the piezo in a regular Fly sound compared to the Fly Concert/Bronze? Are the electronics (piezo-wise) identical?

I can't seem to find sound samples for the Concert (only for the nylon).

Re: A summary of the Fly changes/issues through the years, and a brief history of Parker Guitars

@Ken Parker did not want to change the design and he felt/feels that the “refined” design removed important functionality. This is very insightful VJ, thanks! Would the original Fly design be piezo-only (seeing there would be no magnetic pickups)? A two-pound guitar? Wow. My shoulders and neck woul...

Re: A summary of the Fly changes/issues through the years, and a brief history of Parker Guitars

I really wonder how many other changes would have occurred to the original Fly if cost cutting hadn’t been the focus. The refined Fly seem to have had a few positive changes (no more PCB, possibility to switch pickups), while most of the rest weren’t as reliable/practical. Is there any indication in...

Re: Balanced String Set/Bridge Issues

The issue has been partially resolved…One issue was that I keep my Fly in fixed (down mode only). Switching to floating greatly improved tuning stability with trem usage…go figure! I suppose the extra tension in fixed mode is too much to handle for some reason. Perhaps the string gauge comes into pl...

Re: Balanced String Set/Bridge Issues

Thanks VJ: No locking nut has been installed. The strings are the same as before the nut job (= several months old, but the guitar has been kept in its case most of the time). I will have another look at the nub/control cavity. As far as I know, the only changes were made to the nut. Perhaps the tec...
