Re: Hunt for a fly to mod (WTB, US West Coast)

Have you used these? If so, which piezo assembly did you use it with? How was it compared to other stuff you've used? Are the “these” you’re referring to the GK5, the RMC stuff, or just all the general 13 pin stuff we’ve mentioned? Also: Were you intending to go with Alan Hoover’s Sustainiac, or a ...

Re: Hunt for a fly to mod (WTB, US West Coast)

On similar note, I've been considering taking out the circuit board in a GK5 and using a secondary stereo jack for the newer serial cable system they have. Cool. I’ve been following the GK5 discussion on the vguitar forums since it was announced; and look forward to such projects becoming commonpla...

Re: Hunt for a fly to mod (WTB, US West Coast)

I'll keep an eye out for a decent beater, Augustonian . I don't know what your budget is - but I periodically see '90s Flys exhibiting nothing worse than body chips pop up for under $2,500 (such as this '95 emerald Deluxe ), and sometimes under $2k. The ones which pop up for under $2k don't stay up ...

This is still very helpful - Fly owners can fabricate new hex arms much easier than they can the bushings; and we occasionally get posters trying to source them. Thank you.

Much appreciated, @chrisandrews. I encourage you to contribute any thoughts you may have when browsing discussions, including correcting whatever nonsense I may have put out there.

Are the stainless arm bushings you have hexagonal, or round?

Re: Squeaky Trem

The "creaks like an old door" description makes me suspect your flat spring is showing its age. If swapping in another spring alleviates the creaking, then that may indicate that at least one of the noisy spring's edges in contact with the ridge plate or T bar has worn enough that you're h...

Re: Squeaky Trem

Patzag So, under high gain, you're hearing noise from the trem being picked up microphonically when the trem is pivoting forward or backward. Is it specifcally like a squeaky wheel that needs to be greased, or more of a "creak" resulting from friction (such as hardware rubbing against woo...

Any lube points pointers?
Is it the bar bushing squeaking whenever the bar is rotated, or is the squeak occurring under different circumstances?

Re: A few questions from a new Fly owner

I did do a little looking around for more info related to this and struck out. You’re in good company. I have one of my Flys disassembled for a separate project; and will try to come up with something owners and techs can reference which better illustrates some of the less intuitive or obvious quir...

Re: A few questions from a new Fly owner

Thanks for the photos, DownRight (And a big thank you to VJ for the trade offer). If you keep raising the bridge height by turning the adjustment screws in the rear of the guitar counterclockwise, the posts for the trem will eventually decouple from the ends of the height adjustment screws (this is ...

Re: A few questions from a new Fly owner

DownRight , would you be willing to post any photos of the trem from different angles, and from the cavity side with the cover removed? Your post seems to be saying that the "9"-rated spring is so stiff that the tension wheel must be completely loosened in order for the tension of a 9-42 ...

Yeah. I'm somewhat surprised you didn't buy it immediately! If I may be forgiven for piggybacking on Nef's post, I remind jb63 and everyone else that I favor a Strandberg, as well; and am also happy to answer any questions comparing it to a Fly. FWIW, between the four Strandbergs I've owned, I've never had an issue with the headpiece screws stripping out or ...

Re: E/A String Piezo Low Output P38

Though it's essential to go through the basic troubleshooting steps as you're doing, I'm afraid the piezo elements typically used in guitar saddles simply aren't made to last; and tend to be binary in function (with any symptoms not resulting from user error indicating element failure and cause for ...

What do I care if some idiot pays way too much for it in order to attempt to resell it for even more if it funds a lot of new gear for me? I'm picturing a $30,000 Reverb listing with a Make an Offer button, and a line at the end of the listing body stating, "No: The mere act of seeing my listi...

Here's to resumed pickin' and grinnin' with that new engine under the hood! I appreciate your taking the time to reminisce with us, @Carcass - The guy with "Robert Steven Adrian Belew" on his passport is one of my favorites; and I enjoy everyone's stories. If you ever care to try out or burglarize the guitar, it's just a matter of making the trip up to Columbus.
