Recommended/Factory string gauges and brand
mmmguitar is right on the money here 👍 I'll just add that during Ken’s time at Parker Guitars, they used D’Addario 9s and 10s at the factory (recommended in the manual ) and Ken still uses and recommends D’Addario strings. The Flys shipped with round wound regular D’Addario sets and, as Marc noted, ...

High E slipping off saddle on low trem dives
Hi edkeller ; welcome! What string gauge is that high E? A .009? Also, which saddle do you have: EB22A38F-9428-4E93-B2BD-FBC5130ECE40.jpeg I used to have issues where the high E gets snagged on the edge of the pickup when I strummed aggressively, but never that it falls off the saddle. I was able to...

Using different string gauge set than vibrato spring
The main issue would be if you want to “float” the vibrato as described in the manual —it will not work properly. If you tighten the spring and only intend to bend down (or not at all), it will be fine. Each spring (rated 8, 8.5, 9, 10, 11, 12) was designed to support a specific tension, and, as suc...

Intonation problems with Fly
Just chiming in for clarity, tamoore : I think part of the reason why mmmguitar asked about the string brand is because some brands of strings are inferior to others and the difference in quality and reliability can become more noticeable when working with intonation matters…not just on Flys, but in...

Intonation issues with heavy strings
Hi op3 , Welcome and thanks for posting; I have two Flys set up in drop B standard with 13s: One with D'Addario EJ22 .013 gauge (13-56) strings and one with D’Addario EJ17 Phosphor Bronze .013 gauge strings. Both are hardtails and both are intonated properly. I had to have my tech cut the nut slots ...

Balanced String Set/Bridge Issues
Hi Voice of Reason ; in principle, there’s nothing wrong with the bridge like that—I have a Fly like that. However, that same Fly has some neck issues. It’s not a big deal once it’s set up and working, but, in addition to DLQ s thoughts, I’d just add: -Check to see that bridge floats properly and th...

Vibrato bridge is leaning forward
Hi THN , I’ve encountered this issue before, and, if you’re certain you’ve set the bridge up properly, and that the spring and the string gauge are matched, then I’m fairly confident the issue is that your spring is failing, sorry to say. You can block the bridge with a wood block or continue to tun...

String gauges and balanced tension sets
Hi rsdio ; I moved this thread to the Fly "Tech Talk" section as we might get better insights from others here than in the General Info section. Ned Steinberger has worked with our lab on a few projects related to his current work and we discussed the Trans Trem at length. You may know thi...
