What do we know about Dusty Black?

Hi folks! I was fortunate to have been offered a 2001 pre-refined deluxe I worked on a year or so ago for a fair price over the weekend, so I grabbed it!! It’s in fantastic condition, except for one smallish ding that could use repair of some sort. The finish is what I’d call Dusty Black, but when I...

Re: Time to Refret, Oh Boy...

Yeah wow, there's an undertaking! Fair enough though, i'd go with one at a time too. I don't recall which video it is, but one of them mentions tapping the frets with like the back of a small spanner or something(?) ... something metallic with a bit of weight, and doing a listening test, frets that ...

Re: Fly Saddles through the years

Re: gluing those ball bearing saddles... I have no personal experience, however I do recall a thread somewhere (possibly from the old forum) with regard to these. Basically, the poster had tried to glue the ball bearings back in with a little super glue, but used too much and glue had got under the ...

Re: Top horn

Only real solution is to wear your guitar a bit higher, or a bit lower.

I went with a bit higher. Makes playing a bit easier TBH..

Cheers

Re: Dead Dimarzio Pickup

Do you know if the EP1111 can be wired like the original selector? It looks identical to the original on the guitar. I'm wondering if it uses a different logic for the connections. Has anyone tried an EP1111 on a prerefined Fly? Yes, that switch is a direct replacement for the original. There are a...

Re: Dead Dimarzio Pickup

Yeah I'm with @Barry, could well be corrosion. Use the spay in the switch, go easy though. And at the risk of sounding like a broken record...the ribbon cable connectors! Unplug the ribbon cables from the board and give the ends a clean, use the spray on a cotton bud. Clean the connectors as well. M...

Re: Fly Pickups (Gen 1, Gen 2, and Other)

Hi folks, Cpl of quickies... Treble bleed: as far as i know, table bleed circuits aren't required on active guitars, ie guitars with pre/buffer-amp etc like the Fly. Theres undoubtably some complex electrical theory behind this, but I don't know it Pickup height adjustment: as noted in posts above, ...

Re: Help! Wiring question!

.... Removing the white cable connector from the board really requires a specialised tool that will heat all the pins/solder at the same time.

Otherwise you could heat bits and slowly prise it off, but i wouldn't recommend that approach.

Why do you want to get the cable connector off?

Re: Help! Wiring question!

I think you might be on the right track, but reading the switch diagram wrong. Maybe the resolution of your printer has made a few connections where there are none, the top row and bottom of the switch do not connect, they are electrically isolated. These switches work/connect like below, where the ...

Re: Step Stop Issue

Yeah wow, never seen that before neither! I reckon vjmanzo is is on the money, the step stop itself is a pre-refined era one, and you have a refiend era Fly, so it's been replaced at some point, and consequently isn't working as it's supposed to. Just moving it down/relocating will mean the little t...

Re: Help! Wiring question!

Damn, again! Sorry to hear mtyrrell1982 point-to-point is possible, fiddly as all get out no doubt, but has been done. You can solder to the bottom of the board, the white plug "pads" where they poke through, and just trace/follow the tape diagram. Use v thin wires! I'd hang on to the old ...

Re: Help! Wiring question!

Damn! Cleaning..I was so sure too... anyway...it's hard to tell from the tape pic as it all goes back to the board and we don't know what's going on there, however if you do manage to de-solder the tape, then i would just experiment. These sort of switches usually go from centre lugs to either side,...

That time I met KP

Going through my old photos and came across this gem from back in the day when i was touring a lot, this is around 2014 i think. Was doing a show in Boston when the input jack on my Fly gave out, in the course of repairing it with the in-house tech and talking guitars etc he mentioned Ken Parker liv...

Re: Parker fly electronics repair specialist UK!

Unplug the ribbon from the board.
Clean it.
For realsies, this bit can get oxidised up and cause connectivity probs.
