Rewinding is major surgery so, yup, always wise to do the simple things first (assuming you've already slapped a multimeter on this bad boy and checked resistance, induction and all that good stuff).

I'd support that approach except I'd save the Naptha for final cleanup. It tends to flash off too quickly to be used as an initial application.
